How to register your Djallonké (Cameroon) Sheep in Europe?

Djallonké sheep, or Cameroon sheep popularly. Can only be registered with the ISDGS if both the father and the mother are registered. The ISDGS has established policies governing exceptions to this to ensure that sheep that can make a valuable contribution to the very narrow European gene pool are not excluded and can be registered. However, unsolicited studbook approaches are generally simply refused. On the other hand, we ourselves look for "possibly" purebred sheep. Lab tests are then performed on sheep that we purchase to verify their purity. When the sheep are found to be purebred, they are inspected, DNA profiled and registered in the studbook. Non-purebred animals are immediately presented for slaughter, to avoid further breeding. We use this method because we assume that more than 80% of the so-called Cameroon sheep offered and traded are not purebred. And in most cases private individuals are often not willing to bear the high additional costs. All the registered sheep within the ISDGS have been checked for purity. We try to convince breeders from whom we have previously purchased purebred animals to join the studbook or continue to sell to the ISDGS. So that we can increase the number of animals within our purebred population.

Testing in Flanders in Belgium. After a three year search with many disappointing results. We have decided not to continue testing as from February 25, 2022. We found the few purebred populations. And stick with this small number.

Testing in the Netherlands. We are testing Dutch sheep until 2025.

ATTENTION! The German population is barred from entering the ISDGS studbook. As well as all central and eastern European animals that have their origin in the German Cameroon sheep club (Verein der Kamerunschaf").

AOBA, the parent body of the ISDGS, has chosen NOT to issue paper pedigree certificates as from 2020. Instead, we only work with "online pedigrees + dna profiling" for the breeders. To reduce registration costs. ISDGS membership is free. A mandatory DNA test kit costs 65€/sheep. Do you have lambs and would you like to order a DNA kit?
